Trees in Vedas https://bonsaimane.com/trees-in-vedas/ https://bonsaimane.com/trees-in-vedas/#respond Mon, 17 Mar 2025 11:04:25 +0000 https://blog.planmyouting.co/?p=9690 Nature worship had been part of all the ancient civilizations. Today it is still a part of Indian culture and we all must be proud of it. This article aims at giving information regarding the mention of trees in Vedas and Upanishad.

Vedas have been the most ancient religious text and it is also the foundation for all the other scriptures that came post it. Vedas mean knowledge. I would like to give my namans to the Rishi’s who have given us this ancient knowledge of Vedas. What does the divine voice say about our trees ?

om ishawasyamidagam sarvam yatkincha jagatyaam Jagat /

This is the very first mantra of the Ishavasya upanishad of  Shukla yajurveda. Whatever is visible to us in this universe is pervaded by Eshwara. It says that God is present and all things.

In the same Upanishad the sixth Mantra says

yastu sarvani bhootani atmanyevanu pashyati / sarva bhuteshu chaathmanam tatho na vijugusyate /

In this Jagat whoever sees all life forms in themselves and themself in all other life forms they will face no sadness ever after.

purusha evedam sarvam yadbhootam yaccha bhavyam / rigveda 10.90.1

Whatever is visible to us in this world had been existing from the very beginning, whatever is existing today and whatever will come tomorrow to this world everything is Purusha ( god )

tatho vishwagnvyakraamat / sashanaanashane abhi /

From purusha sukta , yajurveda taittiriya aranyaka prashna 3

In this creation all the living and nonliving entity is has been pervaded by the Purusha ( ultimate reality )

sarvam khalvidam brahma tajjalaniti shanta upasita / Chandogya Upanishad 3.14.1

All this is Brahman

tasmaadva yetasmaadaatmana aakashassambhootaha / aakashaadvayuhu / vaayoraginihi / ragneaapaha / adbhayaha prithivi / prativya oshadayaha / oshadibhyonnam / annaath purushaha /

The Akasha emerged from the atman. Vayu emerged from the Akasha. From the vayu came the agnee. From agnee came the water. From water came the earth. Many creepers ,herbs and big trees started emerging from the earth. From them came anna or the energy of sustenance. From Anna emerged human beings. This is how the creation happened according to taittiriya Upanishad.

All this versus confirming that there are no two but only one . The shariras ( body) are different, not the atman ( soul ) . Trees, animals, birds , and human beings in all of them exist the same life force . Our scriptures confirm that the creation and the creator are not different from one another.

We will now see some of the popular sukta and mantras regarding the trees from the Vedas.

Some mantras mentioning the trees in the popular Shri Rudra prashna of the Krishna yajurveda taittriya samhita

ye vriksheshu saspinjara neelagriva vilohitaaha /

Blue necked , copper colored Rudras are taking shelter in the trees save the mantra

atassamudra garayashcha sarvesmaathsyandante sindhavaha sarvaroopaaha / atashcha vishwa oshadhayo rasaashcha yenaoshcha bhoothastishtatyantaraathma /

From the paramathma images the oceans, mountains and rivers. From him only comes all the herbs and trees and the rasas and the life force.

namo vrikshebhyo harikeshebhyaha pashoonaam pataye namo /

To all the Green leaves and lord Rudra who is the Pashupati I am doing the salutation .

namo rohitaayastapataye vriskhaanaam pataye namaha /

Salutation to the red coloured Rudra who is the adhipati of the trees.

namo vanyaaya cha kakshyaaya cha

Salutations today Rudra who lives in all the green and the dry leaves.

ashwataha sarvavrikshanam devarshinaam  cha naradaha / gandharvanaam chitrarataha siddhanaam kapilo munihi /

Shrimad Bhagwat Geeta chapter 10 Shloka  26

Lord Krishna says to Arjuna that of all the trees in this universe he is the Ashwatha . Of all the devarishis he is the Narada , of all gandharavas he is Chitraratha and of all the siddhas he is the sage Kapila .

These two mantras are from the ratri sukta of the rig Veda 10.8.127

orvapra amartya nivato devyu (u) dvataha / jyotisha badhate tamaha /

Ratri Devi fills the antariksha with darkness. She makes the trees and creepers visible with the light emerging from the stars .

saa noo adya yasya vayam ni te yamannavikshmahi / vrikshena vasatim vayaha /

Just like how the birds in the night return back to its nest in the trees . Similarly human beings also get back to their homes during this time.

aa yo yonim devakrutham sasaada kruthva hya (a) gniramrutha athaarita / tamoshadheeshcha vaninashcha garbham bhoomishcha vishwadhaayasam bibharti / Rigveda 7.4.5

The reason by which the fire God Agni in his consciousness, rescues devatha from their miseries similarly the devatha’s have built a place for Agni . The oshadhis , trees and the earth keep the Agni in seed form .

Kathe mahe rudraya bravaama kadraye chikitushi bhagaaya / aapa oshadheerutha no avanthu dyourrvaana giriyo vrikshakeshaaha / Rigveda 5.41.11

To attain wealth ,  how can we offer our praise to the Marut ganas , who are the children of Rudra or to Bhaga the one who knows everything and has limitless knowledge. Water bodies , oshadhi , heaven , mountains whose hairs are like trees protect us .

ava sruja vanaspathe deva devebhyo havihi / pradaaturastu chetanam // Rigveda 1.13.11

Agni who is also known as Vanaspati. Give our offerings to devathas . Let the yajamana or the person performing yajna recieve high divine knowledge

ashwathe vo nishadanam parne vo vasatishkruthaa / gobhaaja itkalaasata yatsnavata poorusham /

Oh oshadidevata let your abode be in the aswatha ( ficus religious)  and palasha tree ( Butea monosperma)

Many more mantras regarding trees are there in Vedas. But here only some mantras are mentioned . One can study Vedas and other ancient texts to learn more about how our ancestors viewed nature in their times. Let’s all grow more plant and trees in our homes .

Urdhvamulamadhaha shaakamashvatham praahuravyayam / chandamsi yasya parnaani yastam veda sa vedavit // Bhagavad Gita chapter 15 sloka 1

The Lord Krishna is speaking about the Ashwatha tree whose roots are facing upwards whose origin is God himself . The branches are facing below which indicates material things and ignorance . Leaves are Vedas which have a lot of rituals and karma . The person who knows this tree is the real knower of veda or the Brahma gnana .

dvaa suparnaa sayujaa samanam vriksham parishasvajaate / Tayoranyaha pippalam svaadvattya nashnannannyobhichakasheethi // (1)

samaane vrikshe purusho nimagnosneeshaya shochati mahyamaanaha / jushtam yadaa pashyatyanyameeshamasya mahimaanamithi veetashokaha //  (2)

There were two birds which had taken shelter in a tree who were very close friends and stayed together.

One of the birds used to eat the berries of the peepal tree and the other bird used to only watch it eat . Here one of the birds represents the atman or soul which is superimposed by the Maya and the other which isn’t. It is different stages of the same soul . The body is represented by the tree. In this tree the purusha is feeling helpless and sad. Once he realises that he is not the tree ( body / shareera )but he is different from it. He will come out of the bondage of sorrow.

In our ancient texts trees were not just another life form in nature. Instead it had a deeper meaning and role. It was used as a tool to escape from the clutches of Maya or Ignorance .

Repotting a Bonsai https://bonsaimane.com/repotting-a-bonsai/ https://bonsaimane.com/repotting-a-bonsai/#respond Mon, 17 Mar 2025 10:55:18 +0000 https://blog.planmyouting.co/?p=9688 Why is Repotting required..?

In Nature plants take nutrients from earth by growing or extending roots wherever the nutrients present in soil but in potted plants space is limited, roots can’t extend and Start rebound and slowly start root rot due to lack of air in the soil. In order to make available nutrients and air in the soil, repotting is very much necessary to keep the plant healthy.

When Repotting is necessary

1. If plant not showing any growth even after fertilizing

2. While watering the plant water stagnant on top soil and easily not coming through drain holes.

3. Soil get infected

4. Transfer plant from one pot to another

Above are some conditions or reasons for repotting.

Right time to repot.

1. Don’t repot plants which you bought from the nursery, let it settle for one season and it should adapt to your watering style.

2. For tropical plants spring is the right time to repot. Feb to March or rainy season early monsoon .

3. For conifers, winter or rainy season is good for repotting.

4. Plants started just budding new shoots.

These are good times for repotting.

Preparation for repotting of a bonsai.

1. Remove all weeds and grass from top soil

2. Mild Pesticide should be applied before a week so that any insect and eggs in the soil will be eliminated.

3 . Before one day repot.,don’t water let topsoil dry.

4 . Remove unhealthy leaves from the plant.

5. All Fruit and flowers should be removed to restore plant energy.

6. Shade net or shade should be provided if the weather is hot.

7. Keep ready required soil type  for the plant and pot

8. Sanitize all the tools and sharp if required.

Repotting method

1. Prepare bonsai soil according to plant required  like ficus .jade or conifer etc

soil mix may vary according to plant.

The details can be obtained from the plant supplier.

2. Cover the drain hole with plastic net

3. Tie the Aluminum wire to anchor the plant.

4. Put a course layer of aggregate

5. Put a layer of soil mix

6. Prune excess root and place the plant at best spot look in Bonsais pot

7. Anchor the plant firmly.

8. Put the required bonsai soil and pok it.

9.Water thoroughly and keep the bonsai in semi shaded area

10 .Before  repot reshape or Prune the bonsai in case required.

11. Slowly day by day  bring the plant where it is placed earlier.

Is Bonsai Cruel? https://bonsaimane.com/is-bonsai-cruel/ https://bonsaimane.com/is-bonsai-cruel/#respond Mon, 17 Mar 2025 10:53:12 +0000 https://blog.planmyouting.co/?p=9686 Yes it is very cruel. Everyday the bonsai plants keep crying and asking for help. Aliens from outside the solar system and galaxies and multiverses keep visiting us to warn us against hurting the bonsai plants. The plants keep on cursing the bonsai owner to lose all his property. And yes the curse has become true. According to the latest media , social media and all intelligent reports people practising bonsai are on the streets . There is scientific research done by people of highly advanced civilization from the future who say bonsai will restrict growth in the house and you will lose money in the stock market because keeping bonsai at home is bad . Yes it’s all true .

Bonsai is just an extension of the potted plants that are kept in gardens and homes . The bonsai plant adapts to the pot and grows nicely in it . It’s like keeping a Basil/ Tulsi plant in a pot . Due to lack of space and ground we grow them in pots similar to a bonsai . Don’t we pray to a potted thulasi ? Or is it a torture to the plant because we have kept it in a pot ? In that case we must not grow any plant in the pot because we restrict its growth. No hibiscus, rose plants must be grown in pots. If pruning is good for rose plants and gives more flowers , why pruning a bonsai is called restricting the growth. Pruning a bonsai gives rise to multiple new branches and multiple new leaves making the plant healthy and strong. Is keeping plants healthy wrong ? Moreover we also remove dead branches and diseased leaves. If hedge pruning , lawn trimming is ok so should be bonsai pruning.

Watering a plant helps in photosynthesis and provides nutrients to the plant tissues. Watering the bonsai has to be done with a lot of care. It should not be over-watered as it can lead to root rot. It should not be under watered. A bonsai practitioner always ensures that the plants are well taken care of.

He ensures that the plant is not suffering from any disease. Regularly insecticides are sprayed to ensure that the plant is safe from any disease. Suitable fertilizers are applied to get nice growth in the plant. Fertilizers are applied in limited quantities acceptable for the plant. With all this care many new buds and shoots will arise.

Repotting ensures the plant gets a supply of all nutrients again . Dead roots are removed and thick roots are cut so that more fibrous roots are formed which will help feeding the plant better and make it more healthier . It is from these roots the plant gets all its nutrients if these roots are not taken care of properly the plant will die. Cutting the roots is not a torture but it is done so that the plant lives and breathes healthy.

Wiring a bonsai is done to shape the plant. Plants are wired till a certain shape is achieved and for a temporary period of time. Wires are removed when branches are stiff and cannot be bent any further.

When we are walking on streets and unfortunately we witness an accident we feel very disturbed and we get upset and start thinking very negatively about things in life. If we see a person beating another person torturing him we get angry and disturbed. When we see a person suffering from a deadly disease we become sad and we feel for him. Now when we see a beautiful garden or when we see beautiful plants we get an instant change in mood and we become happy and joyful. It is this joy and calmness I have seen in all the customers who buy the bonsais from our place. And the story is the same everywhere. These are documented in our feedback books as well. Why would a person feel happy and calm if bonsai is tortured ? That’s not the nature of a human being towards cruelty. The trees are full of multiple branches and green shiny leaves. Why would it grow all these branches and leaves if it is tortured ? Wouldn’t the tree suffer and die if it is hurt and pained ? Would it not show the signs of torture ?

Bonsai activities keeps our mind diverted from many mental and physical ailments thus in a way keeps us active and helps to give a positive frame of mind . It keeps us physically active thus helping us remain healthy . There are many people who have experienced this and it’s not fiction.

Bonsai can provide healthy air to the house . Bonsai plants help to preserve local rare trees near extinction for future generations. Forest can be destroyed due to fire and human interference.Trees in cities and towns may be cut due to development and population demands . If a household has one or two bonsai, we can save these trees for the future . In case some calamities occur and greeneries are destroyed our bonsai plants can be replanted on the soil and regenerate the trees lost. Many trees have medicinal properties as well, preserving them as a bonsai will also ensure these trees are passed on to our next generation.

Bonsai care and maintenance https://bonsaimane.com/bonsai-care-and-maintenance/ https://bonsaimane.com/bonsai-care-and-maintenance/#respond Mon, 17 Mar 2025 10:50:50 +0000 https://blog.planmyouting.co/?p=9683 Bonsai care and maintenance

All the care and guidance given here are based on climatic conditions of Bangalore and for tropical plants.Though the basic maintenance is same, certain bonsai activities may vary based on the plant and the place where the bonsai is kept.

Which is the right place to keep a bonsai ?

Bonsai must be kept in a place which receives proper sunlight and air. Certain varieties prefer a lot of sunlight while some prefer semi shade. But if you have a bonsai tree do not keep them indoors. The tree needs to experience all the seasonal changes in order to carry out all the functions smoothly.

When to water a bonsai ?

Watering has to be done when the top soil is dry. In general once a day kept outside , in heavy summer it can be watered twice a day. If it rains, do not water till the soil becomes dry. Over watering can lead to root rot. Frequency of watering will vary according to the place where it is kept. If it is kept in a terrace and open garden, watering frequency will be more. If it’s kept in balconies where sunlight is less, the frequency of watering should be less. If leaves are defoliated, watering has to be reduced. Best time to water a plant is in the evening or early morning. It’s always good to use a garden watering can for watering the plants instead of hose pipes .

Pruning a bonsai

Trimming the branches can be done once the branches are thick. Pinching the shoots will help to create new buds. Pruning helps in retaining the shape, height and proportion of a bonsai. It will help in increasing the branches and the leaf density. Remove if any branches are dry or half broken. Defoliation can be done on the arrival of spring.

Fertilizing and spraying insecticides

Fertilizing can be started once you see new buds appearing from the branches.

Fertilizer has to be used only on healthy plans. For best results apply the fertilizer on the soil . Spraying on the leaves also gives good results. Used fertilizers like npk ,macronutrients, organic manure like cow dung manure,  goat manure , leaf compost, mustard cake, pongamia cake, Neem cake , seaweed extract , humic acid , epsom salt and slow release fertiliser for mame and mature bonsai . Morning and evening are the correct time to apply fertilizer. Loosen the surface soil after putting the fertilizer.

If the leaf is infected and affected leaves are few in numbers then remove the leaves manually. If the entire plant is infected , spray the insecticide on the entire plant. It has to be sprayed on both sides of the leaf. The best time to spray insecticide is in the evening or early morning. Do not use them if it is raining.

Soil for bonsai

There is no one single formula for good bonsai soil. The soil depends on the plant and the place its kept. The soil should not be sticky and it has to be good drainy soil . It can contain the base red soil , rivers sand , organic manure , rice husk , small brick pieces . Perlite and vermiculite can be used however it’s harmful if inhaled its dust or if powder gets into nails. Wear gloves and masks if you are using it. For plants that prefer less water use less of organic manure. For example jade and Baobab.

Repotting of a bonsai

It is important to report the bond size to keep the plant alive. Repotting is done to provide fresh soil to the plant and to remove thick coiled roots and dead roots. This will help in getting new feeder roots. Hence improving the health of the plant. Repotting has to be done if the drainage hole has been blocked by the roots. Younger plans can be repotted once in a year or two . Mature trees can be repotted once in 3 to 4 years depending on the health of the plant. Repotting can be done in spring or monsoon. Beginners may prefer monsoon for repot .

Soil has to be simple, well draining soil. Select the plant to be repotted. Loosen edges of the soil and remove the plant from the pot. We can remove the soils at the bottom and in the sides of the bonsai . Cut the thick roots that dominate other roots and remove the dead roots. Use sharp bonsai tools for cutting. Root hormone can be applied on the cut roots. Keep the mother soil intact and remove the rest of the soil .

In the same pot or in the new bonsai pot, cover the drainage holes with fiber net. You can use anchoring wires to anchor the plant. After covering the holes with the net, put a layer of gravel. On top of gravel, put a layer of bonsai soil mix. Place the plant in the pot according to the proper direction and best angle suitable for viewing . Anchor the plant using the anchoring wires. Cover the pot with bonsai soil mixture leaving half an inch gap from the upper rim of the pot for easy watering. Use chopsticks to pack the soil tightly around the roots . Sphagnum moss can be placed on top of the soil so that soil doesn’t erode . Water the bonsai thoroughly twice or thrice till water appears on top of soil. Plant starter liquids can be mixed with water and poured .

Place the plant in a shaded place. Do not disturb the tree for a few days. Once new shoes and leaves, thoughts appearing bring it back to the natural place where it had been kept earlier.

Since the soil already contains adequate fertilizer, we must wait for the leaves to mature . The plant has to have full fledged growth. This will indicate that the new roads are growing. Fertilizers can be applied at this stage that is roughly around a month or two after repotting.if fertilized early, the roots may get damaged.

Removing the wires

The wires have to be removed if it’s biting the branch. The wires are meant for shaping the branches. Once the shape is achieved and branches are stiff , the wires can be removed. Wire can be removed manually by hand if it is very thick using a bonsai wire cutter.

Other tips

When the tree is stable and growing well we can mix one spoon of fungicide , half spoon of insecticide along with half a cup of water. Take a toothbrush and dip it in the solution and slowly brush the trunk . This will cream the trunk and keep it free from diseases. Once in a while why pure part with soap or shampoo water to keep it clean and shining. Remove the weeds on the soil , so the bonsai plant gets full nutrition.
